Nothing says indulgent more than high tea. Dating back to the mid-1700s, this distinctly British tradition is one that has taken the world by storm and if you are looking for the best high tea in Auckland, our new signature menu at Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar makes for an afternoon tea second to none.
Our high tea menu at Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar brings back all the classics of the 1920s including buttermilk scones with raspberry & rosewater preserve, dainties such as doris plum almondine, sandwiches of chicken & walnut, cured salmon, classic egg mayo.
Gluten Free and Vegan High Tea menus are available on request. Please complete our booking enquiry below and add any special dietary requirements in the ‘Special Requests’ section.

High Tea at Cooke's must be booked 24 hours in advance. Unfortunately we do not accept walk-ins.
Enjoy a pared back version of our signature High Tea with a selection of four dainty sweet treats and your choice of premium loose leaf tea served in fine bone china. With the option to add champagne or cocktails, it's an afternoon delight!
Our Mini Tea is served Monday - Friday from 12pm - 4pm.
Our high tea not only features some delicious sweet and savoury treats, but also includes an extensive range of exclusive Dilmah signature range teas. We have a selection of 10 loose leaf teas available, all served in our delicate and dainty bone china tea cups.
If you are looking to add a bit of sparkle to your high tea, you can also add the deliciously decadent Louis Roederer Champagne or Fidora Prosecco.
Guests at Fable Auckland can enjoy a range of Dilmah teas every day, with a range of teas available in all rooms at the hotel.
Auckland High Tea
Located in the heart of Queen Street at Fable Auckland, Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar is one of the newest venues to enjoy high tea in Auckland.
There is a rather lovely symmetry between the history of high tea and the history of our very own Fable Auckland. Constructed in 1928, the building was originally built by restaurant and soda fountain company W.R Cooke & Son and began life as a tea-room and soda fountain.
Since the refurbishment of the hotel in 2017, we have gone back to our roots and the restoration of high tea to Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar is one of the final pieces in the puzzle.
History of High Tea
The history of high tea is a little bit clouded. Some believe it was a meal for the working class, taken standing up or sitting on tall stools, thus ‘high’ tea. Others believe it was a meal for the upper class, taken at the table as opposed to afternoon tea which was taken whilst seated in low, comfortable chairs or sofas.
Whatever the origins, high tea has become synonymous with indulgence and our very own high tea, named Vari-tea for the wide variety of teas available retains all of the traditions of the original high teas from the mid-1700s.
